A JOURNEY OF HOPE

At the risk of dating myself, I still carry vivid memories of the very first Earth Month, when caring for our planet felt urgent, tangible, and even deeply personal. It was a BIG DEAL! Everyone from educators to major news outlets made sure everyone knew just how important protecting our planet was.

At school, we planted gardens with our own hands, nurtured them day by day and watched life push through the soil because of our care. At home, we participated in Clean Up Day, taking to the streets of Detroit to pick up litter. These simple acts rooted something deeper in me, a lasting connection to the responsibility we all share to protect the earth.

THE HISTORY OF EARTH MONTH

Each April, Earth Month builds on the legacy of Earth Day, first held on April 22, 1970, when an estimated 20 million Americans gathered in response to growing concerns about widespread environmental damage and limited laws in place to protect clean air, clean water, public health and pollution. This surge in public awareness led to major federal action, including the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1970 and the passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, which established a national framework to regulate pollution and protect the country’s rivers, lakes, and streams.

Earth Month and Clean Water Action share the same historical roots with Clean Water’s founder, David Zwick, playing a direct role in advocating for strong federal water protections, helping to push the Clean Water Act across the finish line—a law that politicians and polluters are determined to dismantle, even today.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EARTH MONTH

So why is Earth Month so important? It reminds us that protecting our planet and our water is everyone’s responsibility. It calls us to act, raises awareness, and encourages everyone to make choices that safeguard our planet and water for generations to come.

This year’s Earth Month theme is “Our Power, Our Planet,” which stands as a reminder that We the People have power—People Power—to create lasting change. We live on a water planet, and protecting it is at the heart of all that we do. At Clean Water Action, we celebrate Earth Month and Earth Day 24/7.
